After duking it out with Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Rihanna in Rolling Stone Magazine‘s recent Queen of Pop competiton and charting a reasonable seventh place, Katy Perry had her revenge becoming MTV’s first ever Artist of the Year. Perry managed to edge out Adele for the honor based on the popularity of her five number one singles off Teenage Dream, an accomplishment that ties the record set by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. TouchÈ Adele.
This has been a great year for female artists in general. Lady GaGa dominated the mainstream with tour dates, videos, award nominations and the introduction of her alter ego Jo Calderone at the Grammys where she gave a whole monologue and sang a song dressed as a man. Who does that? Britney Spears came back from the dead, again, with another string of hits, a world tour with the rising queen of gansta pop Nicki Minaj and one of her best videos ever in the paparazzi-dodging, cop-fondling I Wanna Go. You couldn’t go online without running into Taylor Swift and her awards, failed romances and the seemingly endless Speak Now tour, and Rihanna continued her chart dominance with a strong follow up to the chart-dominating Loud. Once you’ve heard We Found Love you can’t get it out of your head. Beyonce resurfaced momentarily with a classic R&B album and the jaw-dropping moment when she unveiled the heir to the throne on live television.
With competition like this you’d have to be legend just to make it out of the gates, which is what Katy Perry is quickly becoming. Coming off a stellar year that featured a world tour, Grammy award nominations, a part in The Smurfs and a Saturday Night Live appearance (not to mention the hilarious Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) video) Perry dazzled audiences with her high energy performances and Candyland style, touring Japan after the disaster and hubby Russell Brand’s deportation, muscling through hundreds of shows and never missing a beat. You can understand why the first thing she did when she got hom was to take a cat nap with Kitty Purry. Perry along with the other touring queens are all taking a break over the New Year, leaving only 2012 Kelly Clarkson tour dates if you need a diva fix.
