Via Billboard.com:

Katy Perry celebrated her 27th birthday on Tuesday (Oct. 25) — and for the California pop star, 26 was a year to remember. After releasing her sophomore album, “Teenage Dream,” in August 2010, Perry proceeded to embark on a yearlong rule of the Billboard Hot 100, with a massive tour, awards show performances, a handful of hair colors and a new husband along the way.

To honor Perry’s b-day, Billboard.com has compiled a timeline of memorable achievements from the pop star’s past 12 months. Among the highlights: becoming the first female artist ever to notch five Hot 100 No. 1s from one album, winning Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, working with artists like Kanye West and Missy Elliott, and kicking off a world tour in February that’s still going, and will finally wrap on Dec. 1. Take a look back at Katy Perry’s last 365 days — which of her accomplishments impresses you the most?

Katy Perry, Russell Brand join Russell Simmons at Occupy Wall Street protest
autor: | October 23rd, 2011 | add comment | Articles ,News

Singer Katy Perry dropped by the city’s newest celebrity hot spot – Occupy Wall Street‘s homebase at Zuccotti Park.

The curvaceous Perry and her comedian hubby, Russell Brand, were the latest A-listers to grace the protestors with their presence.

Perry, her hair dyed pink and tucked under a blue winter hat, mostly hid behind sunglasses and a purple scarf as she strolled along the demonstrators.

She did stop to pose for a photo with Brand and hip hop impresario Russell Simmons – who tweeted out the picture for the world to see Saturday.

Brand recently wrote about Zuccotti Park in an essay for his personal website, declaring that Occupy Wall Street “is already a success.”

“America is awake and with it the American dream has awoken,” Brand wrote.

The superstar couple followed in the footsteps of several other celebrities who trekked to the lower Broadway site. Alec Baldwin, Kanye West, Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon have all visited the protest in recent days.

Katy Perry’s Sixth ‘Teenage Dream’ Single Will Be…
autor: | September 14th, 2011 | add comment | 'Teenage Dream' ERA ,Articles ,News

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Such is the thinking, as voiced by EMI Music/Capitol Records EVP/marketing and promotion Greg Thompson, behind the label’s decision to release a sixth pop radio single from Katy Perry’s album, “Teenage Dream.”

The set’s “The One That Got Away” goes for airplay next month.

And, what could be gained is a first in the Billboard Hot 100’s 53-year history.

The first five singles from the album – “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg; the title cut; “Firework”; “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West; and, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” – all reached the Hot 100’s summit, making Perry the first woman to notch five No. 1s on the chart from one album.

Michael Jackson is the only other artist to have accomplished the feat, having scored five leaders from “Bad” in 1987-88. (The sixth single from “Bad,” “Another Part of Me,” peaked at No. 11. Seventh and final single “Smooth Criminal” reached No. 7).

Thus, should “One” follow the first five singles from “Dream” to the top, Perry would become the first artist to crack open a six-pack of Hot 100 No. 1s from one album.

Ubisoft To Sponsor Katy Perry’s UK Tour

Ubisoft have announced they will be sponsoring Katy Perry’s forthcoming “California Dreams” UK tour, which starts next month, on behalf of their upcoming title Just Dance 3. Concert-goers will enjoy the opportunity to play the game before her performances at each of her UK shows and watch a video of the singer playing the game herself.

As an added bonus, fans who record a video of themselves and their friends dancing to the Just Dance version of Katy Perry’s song “Firework” also have a chance of winning backstage tickets to a concert of their choice, during which they’ll meet the pop idol herself. The contest, called “Just Dance Your Way to Katy Perry”, can be entered through the game’s Facebook page here.

This isn’t the start of Just Dance’s advertising partnership with Katy Perry; she was also sighted playing the game in one of her recent music videos, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)“, which Ubisoft boasts has been viewed on YouTube over seventy-two million times. A dubious quote from Perry herself claims: “I’m a fan of Just Dance 3, and I’m glad it brings people together to dance, just like I get to do on my tour.

Mark Slaughter, head of marketing at Ubisoft is proud of the partnership, calling it “a landmark sponsorship for Just Dance, [demonstrating] how this game has transcended its platform to become a hugely popular entertainment brand in the UK”. He also emphasised the connection with Katy Perry, with her songs being included in both previous games.

Just Dance 3 is currently scheduled for release on Kinect for Xbox 360, Move for PlayStation 3, and the Wii on October 11th. You can read more about the game on zConnection here. The California Dreams tour begins in Sheffield on October 12th and runs throughout the UK and Ireland until November.

Katy Perry Laughs Last: ‘Teenage Dream’ and Its Singles Rack Up Huge Sales
autor: | August 18th, 2011 | add comment | 'Teenage Dream' ERA ,Articles ,Charts ,News

Almost a year ago, Billboard published a story analyzing whether or not Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” album had met its first-week sales expectations. In the weeks leading up to the album’s release, Perry seemed omnipresent, and industry SoundScan prognisticators were projecting first week sales of 300,000 units to 700,000 units. EMI had shipped a million units in anticipation of a big first week and they weren’t alone in their optimism.

But when the album only scanned 192,000 units in the debut week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the entire industry, not just EMI, was shocked.

That story ended on this note: “Mark my words: I will bet you ‘Teenage Dream’ will sell more than [Perry’s debut, ‘One of the Boys’]. ‘Teenage Dream’ will be one of those ‘at the end of the day’ records,” a senior label exec said.

As it turns out, “Teenage Dreams is indeed one of those “at the end of the day” records. For the week ending Aug. 14, the album has scanned a few units shy of 1.7 million units, as compared to her first Capitol album “One Of The Boys,” which has scanned 1.4 million units.

But album sales aren’t the only story going on here. As Capitol Records has proclaimed: “Katy Perry ties with Michael Jackson to become the second artist in the 53-year-history of the Hot 100 chart to produce five No. 1 singles off the same album,” in this case “Teenage Dream.”

Those five singles areCalifornia Gurls,” which in all of its versions has scanned 4.92 million units; “Firework,” which has scanned 4.8 million units. “E.T.,” in all of its versions, has scanned nearly 4.6 million units; “Teenage Dream,” which in all of its versions has scanned 3.9 million units and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” which has scanned 2 million units.

Those five songs ombined have scanned nearly 20.2 million units and all the tracks on the album have scanned 20.9 million units. If you convert those track scans to track-equivalent albums, that comes out to another 2.09 million units. That means that “Teenage Dream” has scanned a whopping 3.8 million albums and track equivalents.

Now, the only question remains, will Capitol be tempted to release “Peacock” as the next single in an attempt to reach six Hot 100 No. 1 singles. That track has the best sales of the remaining songs on the album, having scanned 388,000 units to date.

Cole Walliser talks ‘California Dreams’ tour video interludes
autor: | July 15th, 2011 | add comment | Articles ,News

Cole Walliser has a knack for going viral.

The Steveston-born music-video director had his first taste of the online buzz when he collaborated with Miley Cyrus, producing interactive dance videos that blazed through the social feeds back in 2008.

“A couple of my friends were working with her and they had this idea to do this online dance battle with the cast and crew of Step Up 2,” Walliser says over the phone from Los Angeles. “Miley and the Step Up movies were becoming really popular, and she didn’t even ask me — she just said, ‘You’re doing it, right?’ And I said, ‘Of course I’m doing it.’

“It was a pro bono thing rehearsed in one day and then we shot it and put it up online. We didn’t think anything of it; we just made the best video we could. It just took off instantly and got a million views in 24 hours. It was one of the first instances where a really big star was doing something online, merging celebrity with connecting with fans.”

Walliser’s latest coup was hooking up with pop sensation Katy Perry to produce six video interludes to be used on her California Dreams tour, which stops in Vancouver at Rogers Arena on July 19.

“Katy saw the Pink tour and she loved the symbolism and how creative it was, so she hired the same tour director and then he brought me on to do the video content,” Walliser says. “It was her moment to do something big and huge, her proving-ground moment.”

A quick glance at some key shots from the video series reveals a package closely related thematically to Alice In Wonderland and Willy Wonka, taking Perry’s signature candy-coated pop look and giving it a deeper storyline.

“Her wonderland is ‘Candyfornia,’” Walliser says with a laugh. “It’s a mythical world built out of candy and sweets and treats.

“I got a voicemail from her telling me the story off the top of her head about this girl who works for this mean butcher and who always dreamed of opening a bakery, longing for the baker’s boy and then she finds herself in this Candyfornia land — this huge 10-minute recording. I had to take that and construct something tangible that would be broken up into six little videos that could play during costume changes and in between acts. The design was up to me, but I knew what she wanted to do. It was very collaborative.”

In a way, Perry’s conceptual approach doesn’t stray too far from Pink’s own tour storyline — escape and empowerment — or Lady Gaga’s recent concert themes — retro Broadway and The Wizard of Oz.

“I think a large part of it is that a lot of artists are not manufactured,” Walliser says.

“Katy was not manufactured. She struggled for years and lived on people’s couches. She has something to say. She has an opinion and a view on life.

“It’s not to say that someone who is manufactured doesn’t have a voice, they just don’t have an avenue to speak it.”

Walliser, 30, holds a BA in psychology from the University of British Columbia.
