Katy Perry Laughs Last: ‘Teenage Dream’ and Its Singles Rack Up Huge Sales

Almost a year ago, Billboard published a story analyzing whether or not Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” album had met its first-week sales expectations. In the weeks leading up to the album’s release, Perry seemed omnipresent, and industry SoundScan prognisticators were projecting first week sales of 300,000 units to 700,000 units. EMI had shipped a million units in anticipation of a big first week and they weren’t alone in their optimism.

But when the album only scanned 192,000 units in the debut week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the entire industry, not just EMI, was shocked.

That story ended on this note: “Mark my words: I will bet you ‘Teenage Dream’ will sell more than [Perry's debut, 'One of the Boys']. ‘Teenage Dream’ will be one of those ‘at the end of the day’ records,” a senior label exec said.

As it turns out, “Teenage Dreams is indeed one of those “at the end of the day” records. For the week ending Aug. 14, the album has scanned a few units shy of 1.7 million units, as compared to her first Capitol album “One Of The Boys,” which has scanned 1.4 million units.

But album sales aren’t the only story going on here. As Capitol Records has proclaimed: “Katy Perry ties with Michael Jackson to become the second artist in the 53-year-history of the Hot 100 chart to produce five No. 1 singles off the same album,” in this case “Teenage Dream.”

Those five singles areCalifornia Gurls,” which in all of its versions has scanned 4.92 million units; “Firework,” which has scanned 4.8 million units. “E.T.,” in all of its versions, has scanned nearly 4.6 million units; “Teenage Dream,” which in all of its versions has scanned 3.9 million units and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” which has scanned 2 million units.

Those five songs ombined have scanned nearly 20.2 million units and all the tracks on the album have scanned 20.9 million units. If you convert those track scans to track-equivalent albums, that comes out to another 2.09 million units. That means that “Teenage Dream” has scanned a whopping 3.8 million albums and track equivalents.

Now, the only question remains, will Capitol be tempted to release “Peacock” as the next single in an attempt to reach six Hot 100 No. 1 singles. That track has the best sales of the remaining songs on the album, having scanned 388,000 units to date.

Katy Perry Makes Hot 100 History: Ties Michael Jackson’s Record

Katy Perry becomes the first woman, and second artist overall following Michael Jackson, in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 to send five songs from an album to No. 1, as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” becomes the fifth chart leader from her Capitol Records set “Teenage Dream.”

The historic Hot 100 coronation follows the album’s prior No. 1sCalifornia Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), the lead single from “Teenage Dream,”; the title cut; “Firework“; and, “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West). The set bowed atop the Billboard 200 album chart dated Sept. 11, 2010, and has sold 1.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

While Perry is the first woman to achieve the honor, she is the second artist to manage the feat after Jackson. The late King of Pop sent five songs to No. 1 on the Hot 100 from “Bad” in 1987-88: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” (with Siedah Garrett); the title track; “The Way You Make Me Feel”; “Man in the Mirror”; and, “Dirty Diana.”

Jackson notched his quintet of No. 1s from “Bad” over nine months and two weeks. Perry’s five toppers from “Dream” spans one year, two months and one week, dating to the first week at No. 1 for “Gurls” on the Hot 100 dated June 19, 2010. (The newest Hot 100 is dated Aug. 27, 2011).

While Jackson earned the achievement more quickly, Perry has spent more time atop the Hot 100 in each artist’s respective commanding stretch: Jackson’s five No. 1s from “Bad” totaled a combined seven weeks in charge. With the first week on top for “Friday,” Perry is up to 18 total weeks at No. 1 with her No. 1s from “Dream.”

Following “Gurls,” which reigned atop the Hot 100 for six weeks, the title song from “Dream” began a two-week command on the chart dated Sept. 18, 2010. “Firework” spent four weeks at No. 1 beginning Dec. 18, 2010, and “E.T.” landed at the apex for five weeks starting April 9, 2011.

Katy Perry Notches Record Fifth No. 1 From ‘Teenage Dream’ On Pop Songs

Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” becomes the first album in the almost 19-year history of Billboard’s Pop Songs chart to generate five No. 1s, as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” ascends 2-1.

The song follows “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West, to the top of the Nielsen BDS-based mainstream top 40 radio airplay ranking.

“Dream” pushes past two albums that each yielded four Pop Songs leaders: Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds” (2006-07) and Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” (2009).

Piggybacking one record on top of another, “Friday” sets the mark for most weekly plays in the chart’s history (12,468; or, an average of 92 plays per station among the 136 Pop Songs reporters [the chart's entire reporter panel] playing the song). The previous record-holder? Perry’s own “E.T.” (12,361 the week of May 21, 2011).

Further evidence of the unprecedented domination that “Dream” has demonstrated at pop radio? The five singles from the album account for five of the top six titles with the chart’s highest-ever weekly spin totals:

Katy Perry nears Michael Jackson No. 1s record

To say that Katy Perry has been on a roll lately would be a grand understatement. But now, the star is nearing a feat only previously achieved by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Perry’s latest single from her “Teenage Dream” album, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” flies 31-4. As Gary Trust notes in today’s Chart Beat column, if it hits No. 1 on the Hot 100, Perry will become just the second act — and first woman — to score five No. 1s from one album in the chart’ 52-year history, as “California Gurls,” the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.” all previously reigned. Only Michael Jackson, with his 1987 set “Bad,” has so far collected five Hot 100 No. 1s from one album release.

In other impressive and unprecedented Perry chart news, she was already the only artist with four 4-million-selling downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As of this week, Perry pulls further ahead of the pack as the only artist with a whopping five.

“E.T.,” which topped the Hot 100 for five weeks beginning April 9, surpasses the 4-million mark in download sales, according to SoundScan (4.06 million). Perry is now the only act to have five songs sell more than 4-million each. (Lady Gaga is next with three 4-million-sellers).

She previously hit the 4-million mark with “Hot N Cold” (4.91 million), “Firework” (4.53 million), “I Kissed a Girl” (4.07 million) and “California Gurls” (4.88 million).

More evidence of Perry’s power? Adding to the pileup of her staggering sales and chart statistics, “E.T.” became the top-selling download of 2011 as of the week ending May 1, when it overtook Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You (F**k You).”

‘Last Friday Night’ enters to the top five on Billboard HOT 100

Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” rockets into the top five. Replacing Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” at the Digital Songs summit, Perry’s “Friday” blasts 28-1 (235,000, up 259%). The song soars following the June 13 premiere of its star-studded video, whose guests include Rebecca Black, Hanson, Corey Feldman, Kenny G and Debbie Gibson. The clip has already netted 28.6 million YouTube views.

As Perry’s album “Teenage Dream” had become the only album to generate four Digital Songs No. 1s – “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West – the set makes further history as the only release to yield a quintet of toppers.

Airplay is also spurring the fast Hot 100 flight of “Friday,” which jumps 40-21 in its second week on Radio Songs (44 million, up 57%). The song charges 25-13 as the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs and enters Adult Pop Songs at No. 34. On the Hot 100, “Friday” flies 31-4 as the chart’s Digital Gainer.

Perry’s “E.T.” dips 4-5 on the Hot 100. With “Friday” one spot above, Perry is the first artist this year to place two titles in the top five simultaneously as a lead act.

Katy Perry is the ‘Billboard Queen’

“E.T.” by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West dips to #2, but it’s still a history-making week for the pop star, who becomes the first artist in the history of the Hot 100 to remain in the top 10 for a full year. Perry’s streak began with “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), which debuted at #2 in the week ending May 16, 2010. It has continued with “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West).

“E.T.” tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s Perry’s sixth song to reach that plateau, which is more than any other artist in digital history.

Perry’s songs to top the 3 million mark are (in chronological order) “I Kissed A Girl” (which is up to 4,046,000, per Nielsen SoundScan), “Hot N Cold” (4,878,000), “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg, 4,798,000), “Teenage Dream” (3,660,000), “Firework” (4,265,000) and now “E.T.” (3,157,000).

Katy Perry holds off Britney Spears Atop Hot 100

Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West, spends a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (May 5) on Billboard.com, while Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends” soars back into the top 10, and to a new chart peak, fueled by its superstar-studded remix.

“E.T.” (2-1) remains atop the Hot 100 courtesy of a second week at No. 1 on Radio Songs (138 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS) and sixth week in charge of Digital Songs. As previously reported, “E.T.” sold slightly more than 300,000 downloads (down 13%), according to Nielsen SoundScan, edging out Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” which holds at No. 2 on the sales ranking (just under 300,000; up 1%) and the Hot 100.

Charts update: ‘E.T.’ returns to reign at #1 on iTunes

Katy Perry’s latest single E.T featuring Kanye West is back to #1 on iTunes USA after days holding the #2 position while Adele’s ‘Rolling in The Deep’ was #1. ‘E.T.’ has sold more than 251.300 digital copies and is surely Katy’s most successfully song on iTunes because both of the versions are literally rocking the charts. The solo version (without Kanye) jumped from #88 to #20 earlier this week while ‘Firework’ takes the #26 position.

Yeaaah, KatyCats! The reign just can’t stop anymore.
