‘You just want to watch a spectacle, you want to watch what goes down,’ Video of the Year winner tells MTV News.
As anyone watching the MTV VMAs over the years can attest — anything can happen. And Sunday evening’s action-packed broadcast did not disappoint. There was Gaga in drag, Chris Brown flying on wires, Beyoncé making her baby announcement and general electricity in the air around L.A.’s Nokia Theatre.
“Anything can happen during the VMAs,” Video of the Year winner Katy Perry told MTV News. “It’s definitely just the funnest awards show of the whole gamut, of all the awards shows. The VMAs are like a f—ing monkey out of hell awards show,” she laughed. “You just want to watch a spectacle, you want to watch what goes down and I think so many different sparks fly creatively.”
Speaking of sparks flying, romantic moments are fast becoming a trademark of the big show, whether it’s a couple meeting there for the first time and, as in Perry and Russell Brand’s case, getting married, or teen royalty like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez sharing a kiss or two.
“People feel like they can be themselves,” Perry explained of the VMA vibe. “So, if sparks fly creatively, I’m sure they’re flying romantically as well.”
It’s not surprising that the “Teenage Dream” singer is a fan of the Video Music Awards, considering she not only got a husband out of the deal but also a couple Moonmen. Going into Sunday night, Perry was nominated in nine categories and picked up two trophies for Video of the Year and Best Collaboration.
P.S. She was also awarded on the category “Best Special Effects” by the work on her music video “E.T.”.
It isn’t every day a recording artist scores their fifth No. 1 single off an album, and with “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Katy Perry knows she’s made a “small piece of history.” In an exclusive statement to Billboard, Perry stands in awe of her fans for helping her match Michael Jackson’s record and become the first woman to hit this Hot 100 milestone.
“Hitting No. 1 is always a great moment, but when it turns into a small piece of history, you’re reminded of how many millions of people are connected to each other by even one tiny event,” she says. “Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Ever since I was 9 years old, singing into my hairbrush, I’ve dreamed very big dreams, but today is bigger than my dreams. What a nice first birthday present for ‘Teenage Dream’!”
The hit parade that is “Teenage Dream” was released Aug. 24 of last year and “Friday’”s Hot 100 coronation follows No. 1s for “California Gurls,” the title track, “Firework” and “E.T.”
Only Michael Jackson’s “Bad” produced as many chart leaders, putting Perry into royal company in the annals of the 53-year-old Hot 100 chart.

Katy Perry called into “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” from her hometown of Santa Barbara on Monday morning to chat about “California Dreams” tour, her latest single and Tom Cruise.
Katy loves performing in her hometown, saying “it just feels like wearing a big snuggie. It is really warm and cozy.” Last night in Santa Barbara concert goers got to experience the wonderland of energy, colors and candy. Katy says “If you don’t like kittens, cotton candy or colors…get out!”
Fans no doubt enjoyed her performance of her latest hit “Last Friday Night,” which is the fifth hit off her Teenage Dream album. Katy tells us that “Last Friday Night” was actually written almost word for word in Santa Barbara after a debaucherous. So, what is true and what is not true? “Not the Menage-a-tois part, but definitely skinny dipping in the dark,” Katy confirms.
Katy channels her inner teenage nerd in the video for the ultra-fun “Last Friday Night.” The video features an all-star cast of the most random cameos including viral video star Rebecca Black. “I just though it would be so cool to have Rebecca Black makeover Kathy Beth Terry. I think she is great. What she did is really just very pop culture,” Katy says.
Recently Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes showed up at one of Katy’s shows, “It was exciting and very fun. Russell [Brand] had just finished wrapping a movie with them called “Rock of Ages.” So, he has become friends with Tom and he invited him to the show and Russell came as well, it was really a love fest of sorts.”
More than 20 million digital songs from her last album, “Teenage Dream,” have been sold, including the hits “California Gurls,” “E.T.” and “Teenage Dream.”
Perry has several new projects in the works, including a foray into the world of movies.
She’ll be the voice of the character Smurfette in the new animated movie, “The Smurfs.” The new role will match her new look: she’s now a blonde.
The 26-year-old singer said the role brought her the opportunity to “test the waters in the film world.”
She may be venturing out into film, but her first love remains music – and it seems like the world of music loves her back.
The singer is in the middle of a hot streak. She’s had 2 multiplatinum albums in 3 years and worldwide tour that’s selling out arenas. She’s also been nominated for a record 9 MTV Video Music Awards.
No one is underestimating the star who shot to fame with the song, “I Kissed a Girl.” When the song came out, some people viewed her as a bubblegum pop star, but since then, she’s been reinventing herself, musically.
Katy was stopped by Bianna Golodryga on ABCs ‘Good Morning America’ yesterday. She talked about being the Smurfette, her husband Russell Brand and shared how she felt about Winehouse’s tragic death. Watch the videos below!

Spare a thought for 13-year-old Kathy Beth Terry. After spending a cosy night in playing Sudoku with her Weenie Babies, she not only found herself at the centre of a house party and grounded indefinitely, but also thrust into the limelight as the star of Katy Perry’s music video for her latest single ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)‘. Four weeks after her shenanigans were put on display for the world to see, we caught up with her to find out how she’s handling her newfound fame.
Are you still friends with Rebecca Black after the party and are you a fan of her song ‘Friday’? “Yeah! Rebecca’s got a great sense of style, she’s designing my forest princess dress for the next LARP convention. I get so, so excited for her every time ‘Friday’ comes on the radio! It’s nice to finally be able to relate to what getting down on Friday actually means!”
How are you using your newfound popularity? “Mostly just to connect with new people online that have similar interests. I never knew there were so many people into Sudoku and the solar system like me! I’ve made a few really great Weenie Baby trades recently as well.”
Who are your music heroes and what do you like most about them? “Hanson and Sugar Ray, because they’ve both got REALLY cute lead singers! Katy Perry has also been really great to me, performing on stage with her has been so fun!”
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had stuck in your braces? “I chewed on a pen one day in history class. The ink tube part got tangled in my braces. Luckily, Dr. Rosenthall was able to remove it, but my mouth was blue for two days!”
Would you consider applying for The X Factor and what would you sing? “Chumbawamba’s ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never going to keep me down’! I’m very accident-prone, so I feel it’s pretty appropriate!”
What are your top three style tips when dressing for a party? “Make your hair REALLY big, wear lots of neon colours and swap one of your shoes with a friend and wear a mis-matched pair – all these things are guaranteed to get you noticed!”
When is your next party and can we come? “Due to the whole ‘grounded for the next 5 years’ thing, I’m laying low on having a lot of people over for a while. The next party will be online, that way you can all come!”

The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, ‘The Smurfs.’ When the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) chases the Smurfs out of their village, through a magical portal, and into our world, they land in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down. ‘The Smurfs’ comes to theaters July 29th and stars Sofía Vergara, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, Katy Perry and Hank Azaria. In the film Katy Perry voices Smurfette, check out what she had to say about the film in a quick interview below.
What was it like voicing and creating Smurfette?
Katy Perry: When I was doing the voice for Smurfette it was really interesting because I got to be a part of creating her character, adding little nuances to who she is on the big screen, that’s really fun. I liked taking little liberties here and there. It’s basically my voice, but throwing some rocks into it, just a little bit rockier, I guess you would say, it’s like I had too many cups of coffee in one day.
It was really fun though because I got to see the evolution of the cartoons from sketches, to kind of fake moving cartoons to “oh my gosh, they’re in 3D!” It was really nice to be there from the beginning, feeling like I was apart of moulding who Smurfette is in this film.
How was the process of seeing the animation and recording your voice?
Katy Perry: When you are in the booth recording, half of the time you get to see a picture, so you get to see a rough cut, you get to see a story board, some rough animation. Towards the end of recordings I saw almost quite there animation, it was blowing my mind because you get so used to these sketches and working off of that (laughs). You’re like, “ooohhhhhh, I really really hope this is going to be awesome.” Then when you see the final animation I thought, “oh my gosh, these people must have worked so hard, this must have been so time consuming, it looks incredible.” It’s a really beautiful representation of the characters, especially in a live action setting.
What do you feel is the appeal to audiences with this film?
Katy Perry: It’s a great film that all ages can enjoy. I really feel like this film caters to the young person inside of you, because the Smurfs show existed at a different time, a lot of those kids have grown up, you get those grownups now who want to reminisce, have that familiar feeling of when they were a kid watching Smurfs. And now we get to introduce it to a whole new audience as well. There’s no sneaky innuendo’s or sort of taboo things, it’s a positive story, it has a sweet side, there’s a great message. It’s just one of those ‘you can’t go wrong’ type of films, it’s very family orientated.
Her California Dreams world tour, a critical and commercial hit since its Feb. 20 launch overseas, opens a U.S. run in Atlanta tonight. A few days earlier, Perry isn’t just fine-tuning this fanciful feast of pop hits, whimsical costumes, dancing gingerbread men, fireworks, confectionery sets and candy smell-o-vision. She’s revamping it.
“It has room to grow,” she says. “A typical tour is three months, but we’re going to the end of November. It’s nice to be able to expand and get out of the same same same. That’s the fun thing about success. I can take advantage of it. Now I can say, ‘I want a machine that simulates the whipped-cream boobs from the California Gurls video.’ I just want to keep things fresh, keep people on their toes and keep myself excited.”
Perry, 26, certainly kept crowds excited in Europe, Australia and Asia. London’s The Daily Telegraph dubbed the show “a megawatt jukebox musical.” The Guardian’s take: “For all her gimlet-eyed calculation, Perry packs more wit and charisma into her eyelash extensions than most pop stars manage in a career. … (She) makes you actually believe in the ridiculous transformative spangle of pop music all over again.”
KATY Perry is calling the shots. The American pop star says she’s all about work-life balance, building her music around her marriage. She has stretched her Californian Dreams World Tour out over almost a year, ensuring she makes time for new husband, comedian Russell Brand.
Perry is two months into the tour, with rave reviews for her European shows.
And she’s set to kick off the Australian leg at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Thursday (April 28), followed by dates in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle.
“You definitely have to learn how to pace yourself,” Perry tells Insider. “I’ve routed it for me so that I can have a husband as well, which is really nice.
“I get three days off every now and then or every while I get four days off and I’ll just be able to re-energise myself and make it an experience that I’ll never forget, instead of like a grind.”.
