Katy Perry Poll: What’s Your Favorite ‘Teenage Dream’ Single?

With “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week, Katy Perry has notched five chart-toppers from her sophomore album, “Teenage Dream.” The feat makes Perry the first female artist with five No. 1s from a single album and ties the record Michael Jackson set with “Bad” in 1987-88.

“Friday” may be Perry’s latest hit single and the one to push her into the history books, but is it the best single off “Teenage Dream”? So far, “California Gurls” has had the longest run at the top of the Hot 100, notching six weeks at the perch beginning in June 2010. The bubblegum pop track featured a laid-back Snoop Dogg verse and was highlighted by a Candyland-themed music video.

“Teenage Dream’s” title track, an emotional ode to tender teenage romance, soon followed and topped the Hot 100 for two weeks. The music video dialed down “California Gurl’s” candy-coated wonder and showed Perry making out with a guy who was decidedly not named Russell Brand.

Firework” brought Perry’s pop reign into the winter, shining atop the Hot 100 for a total of four weeks beginning in December. The Stargate-produced dance track was performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as well as on Oprah Winfrey’s post-Oscars show with the Staten Island PS22 Children’s Choir.

And Perry kept it going this spring with “E.T.,” her otherworldly love song that featured a guest spot from Kanye West. After its five-week stay in the Hot 100 penthouse began in April, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” returns Perry to the top in its 12th week on the chart.

Now it’s your turn to decide: which one of “Teenage Dream’s” five smash singles will best stand the test of time? Cast your vote in our poll below, and check out a full breakdown of Katy Perry’s chart accomplishments.

Katy Perry Laughs Last: ‘Teenage Dream’ and Its Singles Rack Up Huge Sales

Almost a year ago, Billboard published a story analyzing whether or not Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” album had met its first-week sales expectations. In the weeks leading up to the album’s release, Perry seemed omnipresent, and industry SoundScan prognisticators were projecting first week sales of 300,000 units to 700,000 units. EMI had shipped a million units in anticipation of a big first week and they weren’t alone in their optimism.

But when the album only scanned 192,000 units in the debut week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the entire industry, not just EMI, was shocked.

That story ended on this note: “Mark my words: I will bet you ‘Teenage Dream’ will sell more than [Perry's debut, 'One of the Boys']. ‘Teenage Dream’ will be one of those ‘at the end of the day’ records,” a senior label exec said.

As it turns out, “Teenage Dreams is indeed one of those “at the end of the day” records. For the week ending Aug. 14, the album has scanned a few units shy of 1.7 million units, as compared to her first Capitol album “One Of The Boys,” which has scanned 1.4 million units.

But album sales aren’t the only story going on here. As Capitol Records has proclaimed: “Katy Perry ties with Michael Jackson to become the second artist in the 53-year-history of the Hot 100 chart to produce five No. 1 singles off the same album,” in this case “Teenage Dream.”

Those five singles areCalifornia Gurls,” which in all of its versions has scanned 4.92 million units; “Firework,” which has scanned 4.8 million units. “E.T.,” in all of its versions, has scanned nearly 4.6 million units; “Teenage Dream,” which in all of its versions has scanned 3.9 million units and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” which has scanned 2 million units.

Those five songs ombined have scanned nearly 20.2 million units and all the tracks on the album have scanned 20.9 million units. If you convert those track scans to track-equivalent albums, that comes out to another 2.09 million units. That means that “Teenage Dream” has scanned a whopping 3.8 million albums and track equivalents.

Now, the only question remains, will Capitol be tempted to release “Peacock” as the next single in an attempt to reach six Hot 100 No. 1 singles. That track has the best sales of the remaining songs on the album, having scanned 388,000 units to date.

Katy Perry Makes Hot 100 History: Ties Michael Jackson’s Record

Katy Perry becomes the first woman, and second artist overall following Michael Jackson, in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 to send five songs from an album to No. 1, as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” becomes the fifth chart leader from her Capitol Records set “Teenage Dream.”

The historic Hot 100 coronation follows the album’s prior No. 1sCalifornia Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), the lead single from “Teenage Dream,”; the title cut; “Firework“; and, “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West). The set bowed atop the Billboard 200 album chart dated Sept. 11, 2010, and has sold 1.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

While Perry is the first woman to achieve the honor, she is the second artist to manage the feat after Jackson. The late King of Pop sent five songs to No. 1 on the Hot 100 from “Bad” in 1987-88: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” (with Siedah Garrett); the title track; “The Way You Make Me Feel”; “Man in the Mirror”; and, “Dirty Diana.”

Jackson notched his quintet of No. 1s from “Bad” over nine months and two weeks. Perry’s five toppers from “Dream” spans one year, two months and one week, dating to the first week at No. 1 for “Gurls” on the Hot 100 dated June 19, 2010. (The newest Hot 100 is dated Aug. 27, 2011).

While Jackson earned the achievement more quickly, Perry has spent more time atop the Hot 100 in each artist’s respective commanding stretch: Jackson’s five No. 1s from “Bad” totaled a combined seven weeks in charge. With the first week on top for “Friday,” Perry is up to 18 total weeks at No. 1 with her No. 1s from “Dream.”

Following “Gurls,” which reigned atop the Hot 100 for six weeks, the title song from “Dream” began a two-week command on the chart dated Sept. 18, 2010. “Firework” spent four weeks at No. 1 beginning Dec. 18, 2010, and “E.T.” landed at the apex for five weeks starting April 9, 2011.

Katy Perry nears Michael Jackson No. 1s record

To say that Katy Perry has been on a roll lately would be a grand understatement. But now, the star is nearing a feat only previously achieved by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Perry’s latest single from her “Teenage Dream” album, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” flies 31-4. As Gary Trust notes in today’s Chart Beat column, if it hits No. 1 on the Hot 100, Perry will become just the second act — and first woman — to score five No. 1s from one album in the chart’ 52-year history, as “California Gurls,” the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.” all previously reigned. Only Michael Jackson, with his 1987 set “Bad,” has so far collected five Hot 100 No. 1s from one album release.

In other impressive and unprecedented Perry chart news, she was already the only artist with four 4-million-selling downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As of this week, Perry pulls further ahead of the pack as the only artist with a whopping five.

“E.T.,” which topped the Hot 100 for five weeks beginning April 9, surpasses the 4-million mark in download sales, according to SoundScan (4.06 million). Perry is now the only act to have five songs sell more than 4-million each. (Lady Gaga is next with three 4-million-sellers).

She previously hit the 4-million mark with “Hot N Cold” (4.91 million), “Firework” (4.53 million), “I Kissed a Girl” (4.07 million) and “California Gurls” (4.88 million).

More evidence of Perry’s power? Adding to the pileup of her staggering sales and chart statistics, “E.T.” became the top-selling download of 2011 as of the week ending May 1, when it overtook Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You (F**k You).”
